Installation of Sovereign Workplace

Autum 2023 – Summer 2024
Building and customizing containers of the Sovereign Workplace on OpenShift Kubernetes. An unpublished mix of openDesk and the dPhoenixSuite distribution was used. My role was multi-stakeholder, project and team management. This was a great success and an even bigger step towards digital sovereignty for Austria!

IT architecture and project management in the analysis and testing of open source components for use in the government environment with a focus on migrations and parallel operation to the Microsoft Office Suite. My role was project management and basic infrastructure. There are an uncountable number of different, very subtle potential pitfalls and nuances to watch out for. Migrations are absolutely possible - but you should know what you are doing!

Market analysis and proof-of-concept

Autum 2021 – Summer 2022
The task was to replace or avoid Microsoft's Office 365. The motivations were in particular the dependence on non-European corporations and states as well as digital sovereignty. Starting with a market analysis and ending with an extensive PoC with participants from around a dozen federal ministries, a European alternative was identified. My role was project management but also the implementation in all stages.

Infrastructure for openDesk-SaaS

Summer 2023 - current
For the operation of openDesk in our data center in Vienna, I work on the infrastructure underneath. This includes server hardware, virtualization clusters, storage and backup systems as well as the associated peripheral systems. The toolset consists of Ceph, Proxmox VE, Proxmox Backup Server, OpenShift, Velero and many, many others.

Automation and Auditing

Summer 2023 - current
Automation of VM and container creation, hardening and adaptation of the operating system through to the roll-out of containers and services. With a toolset consisting of Ansible, Cloud-Init and Rudder, compliance, auditing and reporting are actually fun. :-)

Aplication Engineering

Summer 2022 - Winter 2023/24
For the academic sector, I created a comprehensive monitoring concept that had to take into account multiple locations, workstations for thousands of students and countless services and servers. A Prometheus stack was used with the usual suspects such as Grafana and Alertmanager. One thing I can say: knowing in advance when hundreds of students can't take part in teaching is great.
